THE ACTIVE SURVEILLANCE PATIENTS INTERNATIONAL (ASPI) CLINICAL TRIALS PROJECT

New Study: MRI vs. Micro-Ultrasound in Active Surveillance

For men on Active Surveillance, careful monitoring balances safety with quality of life. MRI is widely used, but micro-ultrasound (micro-US) is an emerging alternative.

This study will compare both methods by performing micro-US–targeted biopsies first (blinded to MRI), then MRI-targeted biopsies, followed by 12 standard cores. The main aim is to see how well micro-US detects clinically significant prostate cancer (≥ Grade Group 2). Blood samples will also be collected for future biomarker research.

Results could refine how prostate cancer is monitored—reducing unnecessary procedures while ensuring important changes are caught early.

Brief Summary

The Prostate Active Surveillance Study (PASS) is a research study for men who have chosen active surveillance as a management plan for their prostate cancer. Active surveillance is defined as close monitoring of prostate cancer with the offer of treatment if there are changes in test results. This study seeks to discover markers that will identify cancers that are more aggressive from those tumors that grow slowly.

Active Surveillance for Cancer of the Prostate (ASCaP)

ClinicalTrials.gov ID NCT00949819

Brief Summary

Active Surveillance (A.S.) of prostate cancer (CaP) is the systematic monitoring of men with low-risk, localized lesions, with curative treatment of those whose tumors show substantial progression. A.S. is different from Watchful Waiting (W.W.), which is the palliative treatment of men with progressive prostate cancer.

Detailed Description

This protocol is not designed as a formal clinical trial, but rather an observational protocol; no treatments and no randomization are included. Longitudinally, specimens and clinical data will be collected to provide information on the following:

  • Imaging studies of the prostate
  • Rates of curative intervention
  • Measures of tumor recurrence/progression
  • Disease specific survival
  • Overall survival
  • Clinical data to track Quality of Life
